Nostalgic for Ragweed

I was looking through some photographs, and thought these looked very beautiful. It must be cabin fever making me nostalgic for ragweed pollen. I miss summer.

They are really beautiful! And you say they are ragweed??? Sad that we can't make bouquets for our homes from these.

Ah, ragweed. You know that we are in the depths of winter when photos of such a common and reviled native weed become appealing!

Do you have Giant Ragweed (Ambrosia trifida) there in WV? It's common here in the Midwest and it particularly likes to grow in nitrogen-rich areas such as hog-lots. The specied interests me because it was cultivated for its seeds by early American Indian tribes, and they evidently even did some selection for seed size. Then maize came from the south and you can't blame the tribes for switching.

I wonder if anyone eats Ambrosia seeds these days?
