I don't usually document my mosquito bites, but I wanted to see if I could get a decent digital photo without a macro lens. The answer is, "no, not really." Still, while I didn't capture the beautiful silvery scales on this newly-hatched female's abdomen, I think you can see the dark spots on the wings, which make me think this is an Anopheles mosquito. And of course, I have links.

Considering that you weren't using a macro lens, those aren't bad shots! What camera are you using? I haven't gotten bit yet, but it won't be long. It was in the eighties today here in Hannibal.
The pics are gorgeous.
Seems a bit early for mosquito bites. They don't hatch in large numbers here until the 4th of July. So far this spring I've seen bumblebees and those white butterflies that are probably moths.
Happy spring!
Reya, I was surprised--we don't usually get many mosquitos up here on the ridge top. But when I lived in D.C., I had some Aedes mosquitos hatch out inside my house, and I got bitten in December!
Larry, I've got a Nikon digital SLR, with an inexpensive Nikon telephoto lens. I was amazed last year to find it in the same price range as some point and shoot digital cameras. I've never been good with point and shoot--SLR is what I'm used to. The cheap lens is good enough for most of what I want to do, but I miss a macro lens. Unfortunately, buying one will have to wait a while, because of recent trips to the dentist's office.
